PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR STUDY A DEGRE IN RENEWABLE ENERGY.

It has been my lifelong ambition and a personal goal to work with renewable energy since the age of twelve, when I helped my father install a photovoltaic panel on to the roof of our "Bodega". It was a simple installation consisting of a regulator, battery and a 60W panel. A lot of people came to ask my father how that works. The main factor about it was that you could use sun light to produce electricity and that it is an installation that is still working today.

At the age of nineteen I did my first course for solar thermal and photovoltaic elements. After that I focused my career on renewable energy. I studied Electronic Engineering at Burgos University (BTEC HND) and in every subject I tried to apply something in the "renewable way". In Electronic Controls, I designed the control for a solar tracker. In CAD I designed with a renewable energy source on the roof of industrial premises. The engineering environment gave me the opportunity to learn about other topics that I really liked, as the Sterling Engine. This is the most efficient thermal engine and it works only with the difference of temperatures. Its applications within solar energy are infinite.

I have experience of teaching and sharing my passion about renewable energy to others. I have my own blog and a number of web spaces on the internet which are about different renewable energy forms. In the summer of 2010 I was working in Bolivia teaching people how to use solar cookers.
I learnt how to share my knowledge and experience but further more I have learnt how to maintain solar systems and had my very first experience with Bio Digesters. I really savour, sharing my passion and knowledge with others, knowing that it is going to be making a difference to their lives but further more to the environment. Every Thursday I volunteer as a Spanish teacher. I am developing my leadership skills and my ability to teach a topic for 1 hour, and I think that my students are happy with me.

I think that the renewable energy is not only for the future, but the present too. Energy is a fundamental strategic sector, as a driving force for change, but also as an economical force too, which can overcome the economical crisis. Renewable Energy Technology generates jobs and helps reduce the Co2 emissions, which is the principal cause for climate change. In less than 4 years solar panels have become seven times cheaper. Renewable Technology is continuing to develop, making a sunny country like Spain able to produce cheaper energy instead of conventional methods, making it a real alternative to the petrol world.

Resilience, optimism, enthusiasm and a sense of humour are just some of the qualities I posses. Studying a degree in renewable energy indeed will be challenging but this is a career that matches my values and experiences and one that I believe I can bring valuable skills from my experiences in life. I have numerous transferable skills, I am naturally organised and enjoy managing my own time. I work well under-pressure and enjoy working towards goals and objectives. I have developed excellent communication and interpersonal skills .I am also a good team player and enjoy working in a team. Working in busy environments and being given extra responsibilities has enhanced my decision-making skills. I speak three languages and I am confident in communicating with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Above all I believe I will thrive studying renewable energy because of my own enthusiasm, passion and dedication to making a difference to the environment.

Fernando Santamaría del Hoyo.
